Hedges are the ideal element to delineate boundaries in your landscape. Hedges are a beautiful way to screen undesirable views, reduce traffic noise and create backyard privacy.  Depending on your plant selection these natural fences can range in height from just a few feet to fifteen feet tall.
Maintenance requirements can be controlled by the type of shrubs you select. Certain shrubs can be clipped regularly to create a formal look.  Others can be pruned occasionally to control the shape, and some can be left to grow into their natural form. Depending on your needs, Yew, Viburnum, certain Hollies, Elaeagnus and Bamboo are wonderful options.

Easy How To:

  1. Select the right shrub for your needs.
  2. Remove existing plants, weeds and grass.
  3. Space plants/ shrubs leaving room for growth.
  4. Dig holes only slightly larger than the pot.
  5. Plant shrubs and mound dirt up to the root ball.
  6. Water the hedge.
  7. Add mulch or straw as a top coating.

The weather is cooling off and fall is here! Now is the time to install new trees and shrubs. The cooler weather in November and December allow the new plants to grow and become established before the heat of our Louisiana summers.

Tips for planting success: (see diagram)

1. Dig a hole only slightly larger than the pot.

2. Plant the tree or shrub a few inches above grade (ground level). Don’t plant it any deeper than it is in the pot.

3. Fill in and create a saucer around the plant with loose well drained soil.

4. Top dress with mulch or straw.

5. Water in.
